Rent a scarifier – electric, battery & petrol: local, affordable & flexible

A well-maintained lawn needs regular care – and the scarifier is exactly the right tool for the job. It removes thatch, moss and dead plant matter from the soil, allowing water, air and nutrients to penetrate deep into the grass again. Whether you have a small home garden or a larger lawn to scarify – on Sharely you'll find suitable electric, battery and petrol scarifiers from local lenders near you. Simply rent, aerate the lawn, return the machine – done.

When does it make sense to rent a scarifier?

Buying a scarifier makes sense if you maintain large lawns multiple times per season and know exactly which model suits your needs. However, for most garden owners, scarifying once in spring and perhaps once again in autumn is sufficient. In these cases, renting is the smarter choice – no purchase price, no storage hassle, and still the right machine at hand.

Renting a scarifier instead of buying is ideal if:

  • Infrequent use: You scarify your lawn only once or twice a year and don't want to spend several hundred francs on a machine that sits unused in the basement for months.
  • One-off project: You're working on a lawn after a renovation, after moving into a new home, or as a one-time restoration measure – and won't need the scarifier again after that.
  • Try before you buy: You're considering whether to buy a petrol or electric scarifier, but want to try different models in real use before making a decision.
  • No storage space: You don't have a garage or basement where you could store a bulky garden machine between two seasons.

Typical situations from everyday garden life

Spring care: the lawn awakens

After winter, the lawn often looks like it has seen better days – moss, thatch and compacted soil slow down growth. This is exactly the right time to scarify. If you only reach for the machine once a year, buying rarely pays off. Instead, simply rent a scarifier nearby, thoroughly work over the lawn in one pass and return the machine afterwards – quick, straightforward and cost-effective.

Large areas, professional standards

Anyone who wants to maintain a larger lawn of several hundred square metres will quickly reach the limits of a basic entry-level machine. For such jobs, Sharely offers powerful petrol scarifiers or professional electric machines with a larger working width – exactly the machine you need for large areas, without paying the professional purchase price.

New home, new lawn

After moving into her new house, Laura discovers that the overgrown lawn urgently needs care. A scarifier is needed in the short term, but she doesn't yet know whether she'll need one permanently. Through Sharely she easily finds a suitable offer in her area, picks up the machine, works the lawn – and simply returns it once the job is done.

✔ Whether spring maintenance, lawn restoration or large areas – Sharely makes it easy to rent the right scarifier for every job. Flexible, local and exactly as long as you really need it.

Choosing the right scarifier – in brief

Not every scarifier is suitable for every lawn. The following criteria will help you select the right model. If you're unsure, you can contact lenders on Sharely directly via the platform in advance for advice.

1

Drive type: electric, battery or petrol

Electric scarifiers are well suited for small to medium lawns and run quietly with low maintenance. Battery scarifiers offer more freedom of movement without a cable, but are limited by battery capacity for large areas. Petrol scarifiers deliver the most power and are particularly suitable for large or heavily thatched lawns.

2

Working width

The wider the cutting unit, the fewer passes you need to make across the lawn. For small gardens, machines with a 30–35 cm working width are sufficient. For larger areas, models from 40 cm are significantly more efficient and save noticeable time.

3

Cutting depth

The adjustable cutting depth determines how deep the blades penetrate into the soil. A moderate depth of about 3–5 mm is sufficient for normal thatch. Heavily thatched or compacted lawns benefit from a deeper setting. However, you should not overdo the depth, as this can damage the turf too severely.

4

Collection basket

An integrated collection basket gathers the detached material directly during scarifying and makes the follow-up work considerably easier. Not all machines come with a collection basket – check this in the rental listing if you want to avoid manual clearing afterwards.

Guide values for scarifiers – size and performance

To help you find the right machine for your lawn, these guide values provide a first orientation. The exact specifications in the individual rental listings on Sharely always take precedence.

up to approx. 200 m² lawn: electric scarifier, 30–35 cm working width
200–500 m²: electric or battery scarifier, 35–40 cm working width
500–1000 m²: petrol scarifier or professional machine, from 40 cm working width
over 1000 m²: self-propelled petrol scarifier, large working width
Cutting depth: 0–10 mm adjustable (depending on model and degree of thatch)

Some lenders on Sharely also offer professional aerators or combined lawn ventilators. If in doubt, a quick contact via the platform is worthwhile to make sure the machine is suitable for your lawn and intended use.

Equipment & preparation – what else you need

To ensure the job goes smoothly and your lawn recovers optimally after scarifying, it's worth clarifying a few things in advance. The following list gives you a practical guide.

Equipment

  • Scarifier suited to the lawn size and drive type
  • Rake or leaf blower to remove the combed-out material
  • Lawn fertiliser and grass seed for aftercare
  • Garden cart or bags for transporting the green waste
  • Long trousers, gloves and sturdy footwear during operation

Preparation

  • Mow the lawn before scarifying – short-cut grass makes the job considerably easier
  • The soil should be slightly moist but not wet – if the soil is too dry, the machine cannot penetrate optimally
  • Best seasons: spring (April–May) or early autumn (September)
  • Remove obstacles such as stones, branches or lawn edges in advance
  • After scarifying: fertilise the lawn, reseed bare patches and water evenly

With the right preparation and the right machine, you'll achieve the best results. Further lawn care tips can be found in gardening guides or directly from your local lenders on Sharely – many are happy to share practical advice when you pick up the machine.
